September 2015 Blog;

Hola Ninas & Ninos de My Bad Tequila!

YES, Autumn is in the air, even here in warm, sunny Scottsdale. In the mornings and evenings a person can feel the coolness, freshness of the fall oxygen filling the lungs with hope of a mild winter.

September was yet another busy month beginning with Labor Day celebrated in Mexico with Amigo T.C. Thorstenson, the world’s foremost famous Buffalo trainer and rider and his Amiga Hollie Butler, the gorgeous cowgirl who is an incredible horsewoman and races around the rodeo  grounds at Hogs n Horses in Cave Creek, Arizona with the  U.S. American Flag flapping in  the wind caused by Hollie’s quick pony which comes to an abrupt halt for the singing of the National Anthem by Elvis Presley’s legitimate, illegitimate son – Mr. John Smith Presley.

Hammerhead’s Dockside Bar & Grill was the place to be in San Carlos, Sonora, Mexico as Amigo Troy & Amiga Noreen along with the fine staff, friends and customers were celebrating the 1 year anniversary of Hammerhead’s.  And remember last September over Labor Day that Don, Tina, Connie & Yours Truly, Rico were Hammerhead’s very first paying customers. How fitting to have the MEXICO got LUCKY debut book signing at this fun restaurant / bar on the marina.  Musicians Lorena Robles, Leslie & Bobby Sahlen & Ronald Vogelsang Daisley all showed up to get their copies of the epic, true story of Jim Kawaguchi and his wonder dog, Lucky.  Too Jana & Jim LaVanway, Marcia & Mike Quinlan, Ex Rodeo Star – Tommy Pinnell, SBPA volunteer Caroline Durand, Colleen & Joe Locke, Gerri Ortiz & Tony Matz, John Patze, Ramon Cervantes, Bryan Replogle, Kim & Abby Cady, Hollie Butler & T.C. Thorstenson showed up for the festivities along with about another 200 Amigas & Amigos of the laidback lifestyle of San Carlos.

Remember your best friend in Junior High & High School?  Many of us have moved away from our hometowns to begin new lives, careers while some of stayed near where they grew up, familiar with all their surroundings because of employment, marriage or having a family farm to take care of.  Well my best friend in Jr. & High School, Mr. Craig Clapier went to the University of Idaho in Moscow with a degree in agriculture and then returned home in Southwest Idaho to the family farm to help feed America.  While attending the University of Idaho he roommates with a guy that is a studying for his Master’s Degree and is a coach for the Vandals who later becomes the offensive line coach for the New Orleans Saints, Coach Bret Ingalls and my Amigo Craig gets invited to a couple Saints games a year. Well Craig decides to go to the Arizona Cardinal hosting game in Glendale, AZ and Craig & I have kept in touch over the many years, we know and care about each other’s family and I try and see Craig most every visit to Idaho when I visit my mother along the Snake River in the Sunny Slope and Owyhee County area.  Craig gives me a call and asks, “Do you want to go the Arizona Cardinal vs. New Orleans Saints game with me, oh, and we’ll have sideline passes as guests of the Saints.”   Oh Yeah, never have I been on the sidelines of a professional football game.  Yes, College games many times as I was a former Boise State football player before the “Blue Smurf Turf.” What a great time, Coach Ingalls & Quarterback Drew Brees both received an autographed copy of “My Bad Tequila” for their reading enjoyment while traveling on away games in the team jet.  Thank You Craig Clapier & Coach Bret Ingalls for one heck of an experience.  I couldn’t lose either way of whichever team won as I am now a huge Saints fan right after my beloved Arizona Cardinals; but, now I find myself rooting for and watching the New Orleans Saints in most of their games.   “Who dat?” has become a chant of team support. It is most widely used by fans of the New Orleans Saints, an American football team. The entire chant is: “Who dat? Who dat? Who dat say dey gonna beat dem Saints?”

The evening before the game I stayed downtown Phoenix at the Hilton so as to be able to have dinner and drinks with Craig & Coach Ingalls at Tilted Kilt and as I was leaving the hotel to meet up with these gents, I ran into a couple of HEROES – the Navajo Code Talkers who helped us defeat the enemies of Germany & Japan during World War II were checking into the Hilton as they were being honored that September 12th evening at Sun Devil Stadium during the Arizona State vs. Cal Poly college football game.  It was an honor to be able to take a couple of photos with one of the Code Talkers as his daughter who was accompanying him took our photo.  If You’ve never seen the movie Windtalkers produced in 2002 about this historic, true event, then You need to rent the movie and enjoy!  These Code Talkers came from the Arizona Navajo Reservation to serve the United States Marines, Army & Navy!

Next up was Lil’ Sammy’s Birthday Bash which was anything but Lil’!  It was a Blowout of Epic Proportions due to Amiga Lynn Nicholson knowing how to get three great bands in one venue and promoting it brilliantly.

After a full rockin weekend, I headed further south to San Diego to see Amigo “Mexico Mark” Mulligan & James “Sunny Jim” White at a home concert at Amigo Kevin & Tish’s pool party.  Great Trop Rock Music and then I saw them a few days later in the Phoenix area for their last show together of this tour at Fiddler’s Dream.

Last on the list is an invite to all my loyal readers, Amigas & Amigos & Familia to join me in Las Vegas for Halloween as we tailgate at Sam Boyd Stadium while UNLV Rebels play my Boise State Broncos.   This party is co-hosted by Amigo & Fireman Lou DeZarn of Las Vegas, NV & Author & Tequila Connoisseur Rico Austin of Scottsdale, AZ;

About mybadtequila

Rico Austin - Mi Vida Loca (Biography) Born and raised in Southwestern Idaho, Rico is the oldest of five boys, growing up on a meager existence but in a area that was ripe for several adventures for him, his four younger brothers and numerous cousins. Rico grew up near farmland that produced potatoes, hay, hops, grain and corn. There were several fruit orchards and vineyards in the Snake River Valley as well, due to the extraordinary fertile soil. A couple of years out of high school he moved to Boise and enrolled at Boise State University as a student and walk-on football player. However, he could not escape the allure of traveling the world and began writing and storing his experiences in hopes of someday becoming a novelist. He began by reading every chance he had. From contemporary novels to classical literature, Rico's love of storytelling was uncontrollable. He appeared occasionally at Boise's former Comedy Club as a "Stand Up Comedian" retelling his stories of growing up in a comedic fashion. Rico earned an Associate Degree in Marketing and Sales from BSU. After a few years of low level management positions Rico moved to Hawaii for a short time surfing the waters of Kauai and enjoying the outdoors. He then moved to Southern California for less than a year before heading back to Idaho. In 1991 Rico moved to the Phoenix/Scottsdale area and continued his education receiving a Bachelors of Business Administration in International Business at Grand Canyon University and received "Outstanding International Business Graduate of 1995." That same year he was also selected as "Mr. Future Business Executive" at the State Leadership Conference which included all universities in the State of Arizona. The summer before graduating Rico went to Vilnius, Lithuania and taught English (ESL). During fall semester of his senior year at GCU Rico attended Staffordshire University in England where he also started on the American Football Team for the Staffordshire Stallions. Rico finished his Masters, an MBA in International Management at Thunderbird School of Global Management with a focus on the Latin American Region and the Spanish language. He did this while working full time as a feature writer and free lance journalist at the T-Bird school paper "DAS TOR." A few of his articles at "DAS TOR" were written in Spanish by Rico specially for the foreign students of Latin America. Former Vice President Dan Quayle served as an "Invited Interim Professor by the Thunderbird School President for 2 semesters" and Rico was fortunate enough to be one of 16 students selected to attend his class. *Special note, Rico received an "A" from the VP for the 2 credit elective class. Was it because of Rico's performan
